Wolters Kluwer steps into AI with Della AI acquisition

Dutch information services firm Wolters Kluwer, a leader in the legal tech industry, has acquired Della AI — a legal tech startup headquartered in London and Paris — it announced in a late-December press release

The Della AI acquisition is part of Wolters Kluwer’s vision to create an AI-based service for its clients, the company notes in its press release. Della AI has developed a contract review tool for use in the legal and real estate sectors that can draw conclusions from one or more documents — in multiple languages — based on a user’s questions. The system is similar to other AI tools, in which relevant data needs to be input in a particular language. But according to Della AI, its tool currently works in 20 languages.

Della AI will become part of Wolters Kluwer’s legal software portfolio, which already contains a range of tech tools for its customers. The company has demonstrated strong commitment to legal tech, and also offers tech products and consultancy services in health and finance.

Wolters Kluwer expects its acquisition of Della AI to deliver a clear return on invested capital within 3-5 years, it notes in its press release. The startup has been on the market for almost 5 years, and has a team of 16 legal professionals and software developers.

What remains to be seen is how Della AI will overcome the challenges typically faced by AI tool providers, including reading and analyzing documents that are not easily readable because of their format, or documents written in languages not based on the Latin alphabet.
